We are currently seeking a passionate Web Developer to join our technical team and work on a website that will showcase the extensive historical documentation housed at the Sierra Leone Public Archives. The Sierra Leone Public Archives in Freetown holds national archival collections documenting the history of Sierra Leone. The manuscript and printed collections include many of global significance to the history of the transatlantic slave trade, slavery, and the African diaspora. Support from a series of British Library Endangered Archives awards has enabled the digital preservation of some of the most important and endangered parts of the collections, which are now freely available on the British Library website (see for example: https://eap.bl.uk/project/EAP443/search).
Walk With Web Inc. in partnership with the DRAGEN Lab at the University of Waterloo, York University and the Sierra Leone Public Archives is seeking students who have some experience and high interest in web development with a focus on Social Sciences and Humanities research.
Selected candidates will have the opportunity to:
● Participate in the research, architecture, development, and implementation of a digital repository for the Sierra Leone Public Archives which will feature a collection of documents in their archives.
● Work with industry professionals at Walk With Web Inc. and collaborate with world-class scholars through our international academic network including experts from the Sierra Leone Public Archives and other stakeholders.
● Learn how to design and implement digital databases, with exclusive training on our content management services that currently support over 15 digital humanities project with a focus on African Studies.
● Enhance your existing knowledge with training in user testing and effective methods of user-centred design processes.
● Delve into a historical dataset dating back to the 16th century sourced from the Sierra Leone Public Archives.
● Augment your knowledge with positive feedback from senior developers and designers.
● Practically learn how to anticipate technical problems, find, and implement suitable and feasible solutions.
● Learn industry standards of compliance in web development, including creations of technical documentation and implementation of best programming practices.
● Conceptualise creative ideas with our clients and create interactive prototypes / wireframes, logos for web interfaces.
● Gain experience in developing responsive web interfaces, code optimization, search engine optimization, creating sitemaps, user/process flows following standards guidelines and best practices.
● Participate in the creation of a one-of-a-kind website that will benefit researchers, students and the general public.
Eligibility & Requirements
All Applicants must have:
● Some experience in web development accompanied by high interest in the project described above, the enthusiasm to learn and the desire to excel with a creative approach
● Ability to work on projects involving many changes and iteration
● Effective communication skills to interact with both our technical and non-technical team members.
Knowledge of following the programming languages and computer tools will be considered an asset for this position:
● HTML, CSS, Bootstrap, Java Script, PHP, and MySQL
● Github, MAMP/WAMP
● Operating systems: Linux
